Rachel Carlson

Rachel Carlson is a Ph.D. student in the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources at Stanford and in the Asner Lab at Arizona State University’s Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science. Rachel graduated from Rice University in 2011 with a master’s degree in engineering and bachelor’s degree in English. She also holds a master’s degree in international politics from Trinity College (Dublin, Ireland). Prior to joining Stanford, Rachel worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for four years, where she led mapping and outreach programs to protect coastal ecosystems and watersheds. Rachel is interested in the spatial ecology of coral reefs and variables impacting coral response to anthropogenic stress. Her work aims to support evidence-based marine planning linking conservation and sustainable livelihoods under climate change.
